Stairs are easier to make and more durable, the steps of which are made of overlapping thick slabs or blocks of stone. A stair tread may consist of one or more elements, depending on the width of the flight of stairs. The surface of the plates or blocks is welcomed to be smoothly processed from the outside. Such elements should be connected not in the same vertical plane, but on a bet, thanks to which the entire system is strengthened.
It is very convenient to use prefabricated steps, from which you can build stairs with different steps, height and width.
The flights of stairs built of curbs and slabs as well as large blocks are laid in a trench with a stepped-shaped bottom, which prevents the entire system from sliding down the ground. Such stairs are always built from the bottom up. The slabs or blocks are placed on sand bedding 10-20 cm thick, depending on the permeability of the substrate, or on a cement-sand bedding. Stabilizing the sand with cement quite effectively protects the floor of the stairs against washing away.
Strengthening the edges of the runs constructed in this way is necessary; the strengthening is usually made of the same material as the run.
The most durable, and at the same time quite easy to make, are monolithic concrete stairs. All steps of such stairs are one whole, often along with the cheeks.
Monolithic concrete stairs with facing 1 - foundation part of the monolithic run, 2 - 10-15 cm of coarse sand or gravel bedding, 3 - thick natural stone slabs 4 – 5 cm placed on the cement mortar, 4 - a cheek with a lining of the same boards.
