Layout of roof slopes

Layout of roof slopes (measurement) must be performed before commencing roofing works and applies to all types and types of tiles, therefore, it is best to include a specific tile model in the design. It is of great importance for compliance with the design of the final appearance of the roof and the efficiency of roofing work.

• Tiles rest on battens. The cross-section of roof battens depends on two factors: rafter spacing and loads acting on the battens.

• Counter battens are used to create a ventilation gap ensuring free air flow between the initial covering layer and the tiles. The height of the ventilation gap is equal to the thickness of the counter-batten and cannot be less than 24 mm.

• The length of the rafters used in the calculations should be increased due to counter battens raising the level of the battens and extending the rafters at the top of the roof. For example, patches 30 x 50 mm at a roof angle of 30 ° extend the length of the rafters by 17 mm, at an angle of 35 ° o 20 mm, at an angle of 40 ° o25mm,etc..

• Before measuring the roof surface for the tiles, check the compliance of the dimensions of the roof truss with the design, define inequalities, deviations from the plane as well as parallelism and angles.

• If the roof slope is greater than 65°, all tiles must be fixed. At smaller angles of inclination, the fastening of roof tiles depends primarily on local climatic conditions (e.g.. areas with high winds). Regardless of the angle of inclination, the slope should be fastened: row of tiles at the ridge eaves, gable tiles and all other tiles, to which additional elements are attached, e.g.. chimney benches, snow fences etc..

• Tiles are trimmed at ridges and valleys. Proper execution of the ridge and valley requires knowledge of the basics of roofing also from the designer.

• It is advisable, that the solid tile has at least one hook after cutting (nose piece). If it is not so, a half-tile with a covering width should be used as the penultimate one 15 cm, shifting the cutting line by half the width of the tile.

• Cut tiles overlapping the valley are often deprived of the possibility of a secure support on the batten on two noses. This problem is eliminated by the use of half tiles. In situation, when one of the toes is cut, a special buckle is stuck here (universal buckle hook), which is fastened with the attached wire, to the nail in the patch.
